Setting Up The Narwhal Letter Matching Clip Cards

Print the clip card set and cut out the individual cards. Each page contains four. On each card, a cheerful narwhal displays an uppercase letter at the top, with two or three lowercase letter options shown across the bottom.

To make your set last, be sure to print the cards on sturdy cardstock. If you desire, you can also laminate the cards for even more durability.

Prefer to skip the plastic? No problem! Just reprint a fresh set in a fun new theme when this set wears out.

Playing the Game

When you’re ready to play the game, stack the cards in a pile or scatter them face-up across the table to make it easier for multiple students to grab a card.

Invite each learner to choose a card and name the uppercase letter the narwhal is showing. Then, they will all use their clips to mark the matching lowercase letters at the bottom of their cards.

For an added layer of learning, encourage students to say the letter sound aloud. For vowels, you can even have them say both the short and long sounds if they’re ready for that challenge.

Ways to Modify and Adapt the Game

This activity comes ready-made with 2 difficulty levels. The easier cards include just two answer choices across the bottom. For kiddos ready for more of a challenge, there is another set of cards with 3 answer choices across the bottom.

For children who struggle with fine motor control or gripping small clips, offer dot markers or dry-erase markers for marking the letters. Of course, the cards will need to be laminated for this.

For students who need to answer via eyegaze, these simple letter cards pair perfectly with felt boards. Or, you can just cut the lowercase choices off the bottom of the cards and use those.
