Using the Apple Number Mats

Depending on how you plan to use the activity, it can easily be print-and-go. But, if you do plan to reuse it, I highly recommend laminating the pages or using write-and-wipe pockets. This will help the pages stand up to the playdough, wax sticks, and similar items.

To get started, read the number word aloud while your students point to it on the mat. Then, have your students repeat the word aloud as they continue to point. Over time, the continued repetition will help them learn to recognize each number word.

Now it’s time to build the numbers! Using playdough, wax sticks, or even a dry-erase marker, have students fill in the large number outline. This multisensory step makes number learning more interactive and fun.

Next, each mat features three number choices. Ask students to locate the correct number and either tap it or circle it with a dry-erase marker. This is a quick way to build number recognition skills.

Moving on, students will count the bright red apples arranged in the ten frame. Then they will build their own set using apple-themed mini erasers, pom-poms, beans, or whatever you have handy! If manipulatives aren’t a safe option due to the age of your kiddos, they can simply draw dots with a dry-erase marker instead.

To wrap up the activity, students will finger-trace the number word at the bottom of the page. This step reinforces the number word and supports memory through tactile movement.

How to Adapt the Activity for Diverse Needs

For students who haven’t developed the fine motor skills needed to use manipulatives, try using bingo daubers or dot markers instead of the small counters.

For kiddos who may find these number mats overwhelming, we also offer a more basic version of these number cards. They are smaller and pair perfectly with felt boards, which also makes them a great option for kids answering with eye gaze.

Extending the Fun

Bind the apple number mats together to create a counting book for each student. The books can be used during your morning meeting or sent home for additional practice.
