Using the Unicorn Number Recognition Games

These print-and-go board games are ideal for small groups of 2 to 4 players. It doesn’t hurt to laminate the boards, but it’s definitely not required.

In fact, these games come in so many different themes, it may just be easier to print a new seasonal option when this one wears out.

To begin the game, have each player put their game piece on or near the space labeled “START.” To decide who goes first, simply roll the die to see who gets the highest number. Alternatively, you can just allow the youngest or oldest child to go first.

Games pawns and a die sitting on top of the 11-20 unicorn board game.

On their turn, each child rolls the die and moves forward that many spaces. When they land, they say the number out loud. If a player is non-verbal, they can use these simple number cards with a communication device or eye-gaze to indicate the matching number.

You can end the game in one of two ways. The first option is to simply declare the first person to reach the end the winner. The second option is to save the kids some hurt feelings and allow the game to continue until all players reach the end.

Differentiation & Accessibility:

These game boards come ready for differentiation with 3 leveled versions. For kiddos new to numbers, the first board uses on 1-10. There are also separate boards for 11-20 and 1-20, so you can increase the difficulty as skills allow.

For kids with fine motor challenges, consider adding a foam bolster to the game pawn to make it easier to grasp and move. They may still need a little help standing the pawn upright on each new space, but this allows for way more independence than simply moving the pawn for them.

For students using AAC or eye-gaze systems, you can get this awesome set of number cards here. These cards are great for using with hook-and-loop dots to attach them to felt boards and communication devices.

No matter which way you use them, we truly hope your kiddos love these unicorn number recognition games.
