How to Use the Pumpkin Number Recognition Board Games

This game is best played with a small group of 2-4 players. It is a simple print-and-go activity, but you can always take the extra step to laminate the game boards if you desire.

To be honest, these game boards come in so many different themes, you may as well skip the plastic and simply print out a new seasonal board as needed.

Once you are ready to use the boards, have all the players place their game pawns on (or around) the word “START”.

To decide who goes first, you can either have the students roll the die to see who gets the highest number or allow the youngest/oldest student to go first.

When ready, have the first player roll the die and move their game pawn the indicated number of spaces. Once they reach their destination space, they will identify the number aloud. Then, it will be the next student’s turn to roll.

Alternatively, students can also use a communication device or eye-gaze board to identify the numbers on the game board if they are non-verbal.

To end the game, you can declare the first person to reach the “FINISH” space the winner. Or, you can simply continue on until all students have reached the “END” space.

Differentiation

This activity comes already leveled to meet the needs of your individual students. There is a 1-10 board game, an 11-20 board game, and a 1-20 board game, so you can meet your students where they are.

If your students are just starting to learn their numbers, start with the 1-10 game board. As their skills increase, you can add in the more challenging boards.

For kiddos who may struggle to grip the game pawns, due to fine motor limitations, try adding a bolster onto the end of the pawns.

It may be a bit clumsy, but it will give your student a chance to grasp and move the pawn on their own. You may still have to help stand it up once it reaches its final position.

If you need a simple set of number cards for students answering via eye-gaze or augmented communication devices, you can find those here.
