Using the Unicorn Letter Matching Clip Cards

Start by printing the cards and cutting them apart. Each page features 4 cards with a friendly unicorn holding an uppercase letter. The lowercase answer choices are displayed underneath.

For best results, use heavy cardstock to keep the cards sturdy during repeated use. Laminating the cards is optional, but it will definitely help the cards last longer if you plan to use them a lot.

If you are trying to use less plastic, it’s also a breeze to just print out another fun theme when this one wears out!
To prep the table, place the cards in a stack, or if working with a group, spread them out on the tabletop. This will make it easier for all students to reach.

Have all the students choose 1 card and identify the name of the uppercase letters at the top of the cards. Then, have them use their clips to mark the matching lowercase letters at the bottom.

To take learning a step further, ask your learners to say the letter sound aloud. For vowels, you can even ask them to give both the short and long vowel sounds.

Modifications and Differentiation Ideas

Not all learners are working at the same level. This activity comes ready-made with this in mind. For students who need reduced answer choices, use the cards with only two answer choices across the bottom. All other learners can use the card set with 3 answer choices.

For kids who have difficulty using clips, due to motor and tone issues, allow them to mark the cards using manipulatives, dot markers, or dry-erase markers. Note: the cards will need to be laminated or placed inside a write-and-wipe pocket to use the markers.

For students who need to answer via eye gaze, pair this activity with letter flash cards and a felt board. You can even cut the lowercase letters off the bottom and use those.

Another Fun Way to Use This Activity

Looking to kick the magic up a notch? Turn the clip cards into a fun unicorn letter hunt!

Trim the lowercase letters off the bottom of the cards and cut them apart to make individual letter cards. Next, hide the uppercase letters around the room.

Finally, hand each student a lowercase letter card and send them off to “hunt” for its missing match. This version is great for kinesthetic learners and is sure to ass a little excitement to the day.

Whether you’re planning a unicorn-themed literacy center, prepping for morning tubs, or looking for a quick filler activity, these unicorn letter matching clip cards are sure to bring smiles and solid learning to your space.
